Kandahar Air Field
This air field is the headquarters for the NATO Multi National Brigade for Regional Command South, made up of troops from Canada, the U.S., the U.K., the Netherlands, Australia, Estonia and Romania. The brigade is under Dutch command as of November 2006.
Camp Nathan Smith
Located within Kandahar, this camp is the base of the Canadian provincial reconstruction team of 220 people from the Canadian Forces, Foreign Affairs, the Canadian International Development Agency and the RCMP. The camp is named after a Canadian soldier who was killed in a friendly fire incident in 2002.Forward Operating Base Robinson
This American base in the Sangin district of Helmand province overlooks a suspected opium smuggling route.
Sperwan
This village on the Arghandab River is the site of a Canadian forward operating base.
Highway 1
This section of the highway through Kandahar is known to Canadian troops as "Ambush Alley"
Highway 1
Highway 1 is also known as the "Ring Road," because it connects Afghanistan's three largest cities — Kandahar, Kabul and Herat — in a large circle.
Kandahar
Population: 367,600 (2001 est.)
The capital of Kandahar province. Most Canadian troops in Afghanistan are based around this city.
Gumbad
Canadian Forces runs a forward operating base in this village.
Pashmul/FOB Zettlemeyer
Pashmul is a grouping of villages west of Kandahar where Canadian Forces has been focusing reconstruction and development efforts. Pashmul is the site of Canada's Forward Operating Base Zettlemeyer, or FOB Zed. Many of Canada's casualties in Afghanistan have occurred this area.
Bazar-e Panjwaii/FOB Masum Gar
Bazar-e Panjwaii is the site of Canada's Forward Operating Base Masum Gar. A new two-lane road is being built here with the help of the Canadian provincial reconstruction team.
El Bak/FOB Martello
Canadian Forces opened Forward Operating Base Martello in the El Bak area on June 10, 2006.

Spin Boldak
This town near the border with Pakistan is the site of a Canadian forward operating base. Thousands of internally displaced persons have passed through refugee camps here since the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan.
Arghandab Lake
This lake is part of the Arghandab River, a 400-kilometre river that flows just north of Kandahar. The river's valley is an important farming area.
Rigestan Desert
The name of this arid plateau region means "country of sand."

Population: 2,994,000 (2005 est.)
Kabul is the 3,500-year-old cultural and economic capital of Afghanistan.

Camp Julien
Camp Julien is the former Canadian base of operations in Kabul, housing 4,000 soldiers, including 2,000 Canadians. It is flanked by the King's Palace to the north and the Queen's Palace to the south, both abandoned. Canadian Forces handed over Camp Julien to the Afghanistan government in November 2005.
Sangsar
A collection of villages in the heart of Zhari district's poppy growing area, considered a Taliban hot spot. An Afghan police post was built here in early 2007.
Route Summit
A five-kilometre road being built from Bazar-e Panjwaii north to Highway 1, over the Arghandab River. Canadian Forces engineers surveyed the road, and Canadian and Afghan soldiers and private security officers protect the civilian construction crews. Germany is paying much of the cost to build the road, although Germany has no troops in Afghanistan. The United States has promised to build the bridge over the Arghandab.
Khakrez
Canadian Forces runs a forward operating base in this village. Soldiers there are working alongside the Afghan National Army in Operation Adalat.
Ghundy Ghar
A strategicly important hill in the Zhari district, overlooking kilometres of farmland. Canadian Forces retook Ghundy Ghar in the summer of 2007, and keep a forward operating base here.
