European cardinals the majority at conclave, Latin American and Filipino Catholics less represented despite large populations

When 115 cardinals meet in the Vatican to choose the next pope, they will be electing a spiritual leader for almost 1.1 billion Catholics worldwide. But they will not represent them equally in that election, at least in terms of geography.
European cardinals make up a majority of the conclave, despite that continent claiming less than one-quarter of the world's Catholics. Far fewer cardinals come from Latin America, Africa and Asia, despite their large Catholic populations. > More: How the conclave works
