CBC News
Last Updated: July 14, 2011
The United Nations has deemed HIV/AIDS to be the most severe epidemic of modern times. Thirty years have passed since doctors identified an unusual immune deficiency among men in the gay community. Although great strides have been made in treatment and prevention, HIV continues to spread, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2009, there were 2.2 million new HIV infections around the globe. In the same year, there were 1.8 million AIDS-related deaths. The maps below show the extent of AIDS and HIV around the world.
