    WORDS: WOE & WONDER
LETTERS about JUMBO JARGON

Nov. 8, 2001

I'd just like to tell you how much enjoyed reading the latest installation of your WORDS: WOE & WONDER column: Jumbo Jets and other Jargon.

I will be sure to look for additional contributions on your site.

I have just finished your article "Jumbo Jets and other Jargon."

It debunked so many ambiguities and myths about trade names. The article also told me how we need ownership of certain things (be it names, words, phrases … ) to give everyday life more pizzazz, style, flare. We all use these terms loosely in everyday life without thinking too much about where these words come from or if anyone actually owns them.

It's kind of incredible when you think about it that someone can own a catch phrase or word that has been in use for many years. It is also incredible that there will be a line up of companies waiting to purchase certain words or phrases so they in turn will be associated with them.

Thanks for a wonderfully written article, and "jumbo" probably would be turning over in his grave.

Take care,

Jason Nelson

In the world of jumbo jets, why not call this new two-decker, bigger than big plane simply "Tres Gros"?
