Peg Perego recalled hundreds of thousands of strollers in the United States Tuesday.

The manufacturer issued the recall saying children, particularly those under a year old, can become trapped and strangled between the trays and seat bottoms on the strollers. A child died of strangulation in 2004.

The recall applies to about 223,000 strollers, which include Venezia and Pliko-P3 strollers in various colours, made between January 2004 and September 2007.

The Venezia and Pliko-P3 were sold in Canada, but had different part numbers that may indicate some material differences, said Tony Castellano, president of Peg Perego Canada.

The strollers met Health Canada standards, Castellano said.

There have been no reported incidents in Canada.

The company and Health Canada will be meeting on Friday to discuss what to do, including a possible recall, he added.

A six-month-old baby boy from Tarzana, Calif., died of strangulation after his head was trapped between the seat and the tray of his Peg Perego stroller in 2004, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Another baby, a seven-month-old girl from New York, N.Y., was nearly strangled when her head became trapped between the seat and the tray of her stroller in 2006.

The strollers were sold at various retailers, including Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us.

The recall notice from the CPSC includes the full list of model numbers.
