A group of Calgarians are walking this weekend to raise money to fight cancer. (CBC)

Eight hundred people, 60 kilometres, two days — it's the Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Calgary.

Cancer survivors, their supporters and complete strangers have come together for the weekend to raise money to combat the disease.

More than $1.8 million has been raised so far this year for a total of $47 million over eight years.

Myka Osinchuk, of the Alberta Cancer Foundation, says the money will go to Alberta’s cancer institutions.

“We use the money for research and patient care programs for women’s cancers here at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton and 15 other centers across the province,” says Osinchuk.

The participants are walking 30 km Saturday and another 30 km Sunday and will camp overnight at the Currie Barracks.

One of the breast cancer survivors walking this weekend is Laurene Mitchell.

“I've just decided to embrace the challenge as opposed to sulk about it and walk in this walk to raise money to hopefully find a cure for everybody else who comes after me. This year I raised just under $17,000, over the eight years, raised $100,000.”
