Sudbury hospital pushes home-based care for seniors

The hospital in Sudbury hopes to be treating more senior patients in their homes by the end of the year.
Health Sciences North announced two new programs last night — Continued Care and Virtual Ward.
Both aim to conitue care for patients over 75 after they leave hospital.
One program will involve house calls from nurses, while the other will feature a 24-hour hotline to staff at the hospital.
Joe Pilon, chief operating officer of Sudbury's Health Sciences North.Hospital chief operating officer Joe Pilon said he isn't sure how much the new programs will cost.
"But, I mean, it's still a much more efficient, less costly way of caring for these patients than having to care for them in a bed,” he said.
Pilon noted the hospital is still working out how many patients the new programs will serve and how much staff will be needed.
He said the hospital is looking to cut elsewhere in its budget for the money to pay for the new initiatives.
"It's the right thing to do, so we have to make the investments in that and we have to find those from programs that might not be the right things to do anymore,” Pilon said.
Health Sciences North aims to have both programs up and running by the end of the year.
