Fletcher was born and raised in England and holds a medical degree from the University of Cambridge in England and a master's degree in public health from Harvard University, the CMA said.
Fletcher managed his own internet medical knowledge company before moving to the British Medical Journal for seven years. He was previously the deputy editor, research, at CMAJ.
The journal's interim editor, Dr. Rajendra Kale, wrote several headline-grabbing editorials during his stint. The latest urged health care professionals to delay revealing the gender of a fetus until after 30 weeks to prevent selective abortions of female fetuses.
Previously, Kale called on hospitals to abolish parking fees and ban fighting in hockey.
"John Fletcher has the right combination of leadership and interpersonal skills, editorial expertise and a commitment to knowledge transfer," Paul-Emile Cloutier, Secretary General and CEO of the CMA, said in a statement. "I think he will be an excellent editor-in-chief."
Fletcher said he has honoured by the appointment.
