A popular downtown Toronto pizza joint is serving up slices again after it was closed for nearly a week for failing a health inspection.

Cora Pizza, a popular takeout eatery near the University of Toronto, was shut down Dec. 21 after several dead rats and fresh rat droppings were found on the premises.

Toronto Public Health said the owners of the pizzeria — near Spadina Avenue and Harbord Street — failed to prevent "gross unsanitary conditions."

The restaurant’s citation also said an employee didn’t wash his or her hands as required, and steps weren’t taken to prevent food from being contaminated.

Cora failed a followup inspection Dec. 23, then passed a further test the next day.

It’s the third time Cora has drawn the attention of Toronto Public Health this year. In June, an inspector gave the restaurant a "conditional pass" after uncovering unsanitary conditions there.

The restaurant was also cited in March for having rodents and other unsanitary conditions.
