Top officials at Western Memorial Hospital say they've worked hard to make sure surgeries aren't cancelled because of flooding.

A laboratory and pharmacy in the Corner Brook hospital's basement were flooded Wednesday with up to 12 centimetres of water after a municipal storm sewer backed up during heavy rainfall.

But appointments at Western Memorial won't be cancelled, the regional health authority's chief operating officer said Thursday.

"My major concern this morning was the OR because we had people working through the night making sure instruments were sterilized for the OR this morning. So, we wouldn't have to cancel OR. Right now we seem like we're going to be operational for today," said Minnie Wasmeier, COO of Western Health.

The extent of the flood damage is still being assessed. The hospital lost some supplies stored close to the floor.

The flooding postponed laboratory tests for some patients Wednesday.
