Frito Lay Canada recalls pistachios over salmonella concerns

A brand of pistachio nuts is being voluntarily recalled by Mississauga, Ont.-based Frito Lay Canada over concerns the product may be contaminated with salmonella.
The company and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a warning to the public Tuesday not to consume Munchies brand pistachios.
The affected product is sold in 50-gram packages (UPC 0-60410-04595-4) bearing dates between Aug. 4 and Dec. 15, 2009.
The CFIA said the packages contain pistachios linked to the U.S. recall of more than 900,000 kilograms of nuts by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc. due to salmonella contamination.
The Munchies brand has been distributed nationally in Canada, but there have been no reported illnesses associated with consumption of the product.
Eating food contaminated with salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, as well as less serious illnesses in otherwise healthy people.
