(Tom Hanson/Canadian Press) Hershey's chocolates and candies recalled two years ago over salmonella fears and subsequently stolen from a recycling depot are now being sold in Toronto-area stores, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Thursday.
The products — including Oh Henry!, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Glosettes — were recalled in November 2006 after Hershey's detected Salmonella bacteria in its plant in Smith Falls, Ont.
The following year, some of the products were stolen from a Toronto recycling depot that was contracted to collect and dispose of the questionable products.
At least 640 chocolate bars have now been recovered from five stores in the Toronto area, the CFIA said. Agency spokesman Garfield Balsom said more of the products might be for sale in other convenience and variety stores.
No illnesses have been reported, he said.
The CFIA warns that foods tainted with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but the bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. People with weak immune systems are particularly vulnerable to salmonella poisoning.
Hershey's spokesman Kirk Saville said the recalled candy is being sold to stores through illegal channels.
He stressed that Halloween candy was not affected by the recall.
The recalled candy has codes ranging from 6417 to 6455 on the package. Products listed in the 2006 recall include:
- Hershey's Chipits milk chocolate chips - 270 grams.
- Hershey's creamy milk chocolate with almonds - 43 grams.
- Hershey creamy milk chocolate - 45 grams.
- Oh Henry! - 62.5 grams; 62.5 grams/4 bars; 145 grams.
- Oh Henry! Bites - 130 grams.
- Oh Henry! peanut butter - 60 grams.
- Hershey Chipits semi-sweet chocolate chips - 350 grams; 2 kilograms.
- Hershey Chipits semi-sweet mint chocolate chips - 300 grams.
- Hershey semi-sweet chocolate chips - 300 grams.
- Hershey's Special Dark chocolate - 45 grams.
- Hershey's Special Dark chocolate with almonds - 43 grams.
- Reese's Peanut Butter Cups - 51 grams; 68 grams; 51 grams/4 bars.
- Lowney Cherry Blossom - 45 grams.
- Glosette peanuts - 45 grams.
- Glosette almond - 42 grams.
- Glosette raisin - 50 grams; 145 grams.
- Hershey's chocolate shell topping - 177 millilitres.
