A controversial pathologist from Ontario has been fined and reprimanded by the Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Charles Smith, who had been practising in Saskatoon, has been ordered to pay roughly $2,400 for the cost of its investigation.
On Friday, the college said Smith had pleaded guilty to a charge of unprofessional conduct.
When he applied for a licence to practise in Saskatchewan, he did not disclose that he had been the subject of an investigation in Ontario, the college said.
Smith is at the centre of an inquiry into more than 40 autopsies he performed on children while he was a forensic pathologist in Ontario.
Some of those examinations led to wrongful convictions and at least three are the subject of lawsuits.
Smith left Ontario to find work in Saskatoon as a surgical pathologist. His licence in Saskatchewan was revoked after the situation in Ontario came to light. He has reapplied to practise in Saskatchewan.
Last year, the Saskatoon Health Region revoked his privileges, but Smith appealed that decision and won.
