Canada's first centre dedicated to colon cancer screening will be opening in Calgary this fall.
The University of Calgary and the Calgary Health Region have reached an agreement to finance the centre, which will be located on the site of the Foothills Medical Centre, officials announced Wednesday.
The $64-million centre will eventually be capable of performing more than 20,000 colonoscopies a year.
"This is a unique program in the country and we are trying to take a leadership role and provide service for the city, but also to take a leadership role provincially and nationally as well," said Dr. Ron Bridges, part of the team spearheading the project.
According to the Calgary Health Region colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Alberta. Health officials recommend colon cancer screening for people 50 years or older, and for those younger with a family history of colon cancer.
