Get ready for a little audience participation at the upcoming Emmy Awards. Stars will be singing themes from classic television series, and the audience will get to vote on who they think is best.

Organizers are calling it "Emmy Idol". The only solo performer will be Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), who will be performing Fame. The duets could be memorable:

  • William Shatner (Boston Legal) and opera's Frederica von Stade with the theme from Shatner's 1960s series Star Trek.
  • Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Donald Trump (The Apprentice) with the Green Acres theme.
  • Gary Dourdan (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) and R&B artist Macy Gray with Movin' On Up from The Jeffersons.
  • "There are certain television theme songs that are nearly as memorable as the shows connected to them," said Ken Ehrlich, the ceremony's executive producer.

The Sept. 18 ceremony will open with Earth, Wind & Fire performing its song "September" along with the Black Eyed Peas, looking at key moments from the previous television season.

Ellen DeGeneres, who is a Louisiana native, will host the show. In honour of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, all Emmy presenters and performers will be given magnolias, the state flower of both Louisiana and Mississippi.
