Copenhagen blog: Looking for fair agreement

So I'm sitting here in the new NGO workspace in downtown Copenhagen. They've just completed the Fossil of the Year ceremony; a dubious honour bestowed by over 400 NGOs on the country that has done the most to block progress. Who won? Canada, of course.
We're downtown because, like most of the 18,000 civil society representatives, we've essentially been kicked out of the UN conference. By "civil society" I mean youth delegations, trade unions, indigenous representatives, NGOs, faith groups, and pretty much any citizen who cares enough about the outcome to make the trek to Copenhagen.
We were pretty upset with this development because it meant we could no longer attend the daily briefings with Canadian negotiators. These are essential for any Canadian who cares about the outcome of this conference.
Fortunately, we have some friends on the inside. A few members of the NWT Legislature are on the Canadian delegation, are still inside the conference, and graciously agreed to ask questions on behalf of the Canadian Youth Delegation (CYD).
Yesterday they asked Canada's negotiators to comment on the sit in Canadian youth were engaged in the previous day, considering that Canada is blocking progress. Canada's chief negotiator responded by specifically asking the CYD to explain to him how Canada is blocking progress.
In a nutshell, our country's minority government insists on holding fast to unreasonable positions that are openly condemned by the vast majority of countries involved in this consensus process, like terminating the Kyoto Protocol. Harper is slapping down untenable positions that, in order to be accepted, would require nearly every other country on earth to make major concessions on their positions. This is like walking into court and telling the judge you want to sue someone for one hundred million billion quadrillion dollars. It's never going to happen and you know it (but if you've got good lawyers you can tie up the system for a while).
Well, if I wanted to give you the full story of how Canada blocks progress this blog would be a thousand pages long. So I'll wrap it up by suggesting you search the internet for CYD's response to this question for more detail.
Remember that we must hold Stephen Harper and the other world leaders accountable for the outcome of these negotiations. And don't be fooled by thinking any "agreement" is a good thing. We need a fair, ambitious and legally binding agreement, not a last-minute whitewash document that does nothing to combat global warming.

If alge is a great consumer of co2. Why don,t they build a large alge lake or plant next to a power station, and use the emissions to feed the alge. Then turn the alge into fuel.
You assume that there is global warming.
I assume that there is not.
You are in Copenhagen at the cost of the taxpayer.
I am at work paying taxes.
You choose to believe in science that has proven to be tainted by fraud.
I choose to hear both sides of this story before forming an opinion , but never see the pro accepting offers to debate from the con. This tells me there is something wrong.
This is about money, who pays and who gets how much. Canadians need all the money we have for developing and implementing greener initiatives here in Canada. Trust that we as Canadianss want to "save" the world.
You want to save the environment ?.
Stop flying on airplanes, don't go on a cruise liner , stop buying crap you don't need.
Push to stop ethenol subsidies.
End immigration into Canada to prevent more stress on our resources , stay within our present sustainable population and it's natural growth.
Allow only LED lighting to be left on in offices buildings at night
And last but is first and foremost ...plant a maple tree.
@mo
here we go again.
People who understand the science behind how the planet functions don't "assume" global warming is happening. A series of facts and data have led them to that conclusion.
You deniers, on the other hand, do assume that it's not happening. You don't base your judgment on anything grounded in fact or science, you just make an assumption because it fits with what you want to believe.
epic fail.

Complete ignorance on the part of these right-wing nutbar posters - these youth are over there on their own dime, not a cent of taxpayer money was spent to send them.
However, tons of taxpayer cash was used to send literally dozens of "eminent advisors" to Copenhagen with the minority Conservative government delegation, including Mike Holmes. What the hell? Maybe you should be directing your anger where it belongs.

A reasonably intelligent person should know that there is little difference between poltical parties. Even the some of the kiddies might have wised up to that fact.
Also , there are plenty on the left that know
a politically inspired hoax/agenda when they smell one. Wise people are not always from the right .
And , such language in your post . Please try for some decorum .
and Happy New Year !
