Posted in Canada Votes - Your Turn Posted by Gary Graves on October 3, 2008 10:50 AM |

Tonight’s Your Turn was all about winners and losers. We asked you who won this week’s debates. We talked about the Canadian leaders’ French and English debates and the vice-presidential debate south of the border.

Erin Fitzgerald, the President of the Hart House Debating Club at the University of Toronto, and herself a first time voter, joined us on set. She shared her thoughts on all the debates and offered the insight of a debater.

We spoke with Joe Kiloran on phone as well. He's the coach of the debating team at Malvern Collegiate in Toronto. He told us about the how his students viewed the debate.

We were extremely lucky to be joined via webcam by Zac Plavsic. Zac represented Canada in sailing at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. After telling us his thoughts on the leader’s debates, Zac also told us he has his sights set on representing Canada in London in 2012. Best of luck, Zac.

Viewers were split for the most part on who actually won the debates. We heard many people suggest Conservative Leader Steven Harper was the winner. But NDP Leader Jack Layton, Liberal Stéphane Dion, and Elizabeth May of the Green Party all had their supporters.

Here are a couple of emails we didn’t get to tonight that illustrate that point:

The English moderator did a better job than the French moderator, but the format was horrible and the physical layout was terrible. It pitted Harper against the others, who all looked and acted like out of control attack dogs. We were extremely proud of our prime minister for keeping his cool and calmly making his points and explaining it like it really is.

Hi all :) I think it's a real three-way tie between the Liberals , NDP, and Greens. The Bloc just kills real votes.
... StefD very good too :)

May won the debate. She is fiesty! But Stéphane Dion won my vote because he is ready to lead. He presented a solid plan to help the average Canadian like myself. And he looks honest and respectable. That's what we need for Canada's image.

Thanks to everyone who contacted us tonight.
We’re back Monday at 8 pm ET, 5 p.m. ET with a show all about attack ads.

See you then.
