Tonight on Your Turn, we looked at the interchangeable issues of the economy and the environment. With insiders’ outlook and outsiders’ insight, we brought the opinions of viewers and experts together.

We also took a glance at the skirmish around a Stéphane Dion interview yesterday. Conservative Leader Stephen Harper said it demonstrated that the Liberal leader is unqualified to lead. The other party leaders said they disagree with Dion’s policies but have all have had questions they couldn’t answer.

Carol from Brandon, Man., and Jean from Aylmer, Que., called in and said it was silly, and the leaders should be talking about the economy.

Back to enviro-nomics. Adrian from Kincardine, Ont., said there was a distinct connection between the environment and the economy. Adam and Natassia, both from Ottawa, said it was a false start to consider one without the other and the environment should be at the basis of the new economic system.

Gabriel Idleman, a PhD student in political science at University of Toronto joined Suhana to talk to callers.

Here’s an email we couldn’t get into the show:

The problem is that "environomical" decisions have long-term results that go beyond the four-year mandate. For politicians, results must be seen in the short term. This, for example, makes investments in fossil fuels more attractive than promoting alternative energy. I for one am much more attracted to a government that makes responsible, long-term, economically sustainable economic decisions for present and future generations than a government that undermines my intelligence by celebrating supposed "environmental" plans that leave all the room to unsustainable development.
