He has had more than 100 articles published in Canadian newspapers and journals. He hosted his own nationally syndicated television show, Beyond Politics, for five years.
Community Activities: Provided care to remote aboriginal villages and did two tours of duty at a rural bush hospital on the Mozambique border during that country's civil war.

In January 2004, he announced he would not join the new Conservative party; he would sit as an Independent until the next election and seek the Liberal nomination in the riding, which he won as a Liberal in 2004.
