He also has experience in recreation and physical education with a number of organizations, including the Boys' Clubs of Vancouver, the Canadian Armed Forces Base in Portage La Prairie, Man., for the Coquitlam and New Westminster recreation departments, where he was part-time leader and co-ordinator, and for the Yukon government as co-ordinator for the Canada Games (1976-77) and a recreation consultant (1977-79). He was also a freelance translator, and is a karate instructor with the Castlegar Karate Club.

Community Activities: Was involved with the Boys' Clubs of Vancouver, the Burnaby, Coquitlam and New Westminster recreation departments, the Canadian Youth Hostelling Association in Whitehorse and served on the Coaching Council of Canada in the 1970s.

Federal: Was defeated in British Columbia Southern Interior in 2004, but elected as member of Parliament in 2006.
