Education: Holds a BA and a law degree from the University of Alberta. Holds a master's of law from Dalhousie Law School in Halifax, N.S.
Career Background: Worked for the federal government handling a senior portfolio as the chief of enforcement for Environment Canada. Served as assistant deputy minister for renewable resources for the Yukon government, representing that province's government on the Science Advisory Board to the Arctic Environmental Strategy. Also founded Alberta's Environmental Law Centre and served on the executive of the environment section of the Canadian Bar Association. Also served on the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment's committee to implement national standards for mercury emitted by coal-fired power plants. Taught environmental law at Dalhousie Law School and has authored numerous legal publications. As head of law and enforcement for the North American Commission for Environmental Co-operation, spent four years working with Canadian, American and Mexican officials. Has also served as a senior legal advisor to Indonesia, Bangladesh and Jamaica in instituting programs for effective environmental enforcement for CIDA, Asian Development Bank and World Bank funded projects.
Community Activities: Is vice-president of Sierra Legal Defence Fund. Is also vice-president of the Lake Wabamun Enhancement and Protection Association. Board member of Alberta's Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA), participating in the Emerald Award-winning team for improved air pollution control from electrical power generators. Member of the Alberta Environmental Network's energy caucus. Board member of Environmental Careers Organization. As part of the Edmonton Social Planning Council, authored a community-self-help planning manual and helped found a number of community boards and services including the Society for the Protection of Architectural Resources in Edmonton (SPARE), the Catalyst Theatre, the Edmonton Rape Crisis Center and the National Action Committee on the Status of Women. Co-ordinated the Rossdale Living Heritage Park Plan project. Has received a YWCA Tribute for her community service.
