Career Background: Upon graduating from Northwestern in 1985 and moving to Edmonton, he began a teaching career as a professor of economics at the University of Alberta. From 2002 to 2005, he served as associate dean in the faculty of arts. In 2007, he taught at the University of Alberta faculty of arts study-abroad program in Cortona, Italy. He has also written eight books and over 50 articles on an array of subjects including economic growth, technological innovation, ethics, and interdisciplinary theory and practice.

Community Activities: He served as a board member of the Alberta Gaming Research Institute and the Edmonton Social Planning Council, and has coached soccer for six years.
