Edmonton North was held by Reform/Canadian Alliance member Deborah Grey from 1997 to 2004. She became a member of the Conservative party when it was formed in 2003. In 2000, Grey beat Liberal Jim Jacuta by 7,277 votes.

This area had gone Liberal — by just 202 votes — in 1993 and had been won by the Tories in the four previous elections.
