Edmonton Leduc

This riding covers a section of southwest Edmonton as well as part of Leduc County, including the town of Devon. Edmonton-Leduc is bounded by city limits in the south and runs to the North Saskatchewan River and Whitemud Drive in the north. It lies between the Calgary Trail, Highway 625 and Range Road 235 in the east and the North Saskatchewan River and Highway 60 in the west.

Twenty-two per cent of residents are immigrants, and 2.5 per cent are aboriginal. Seventy-four per cent have English as a mother tongue, 1.7 per cent have French, and 23 per cent a language other than English or French. Chinese, German and Ukrainian lead the non-official-language list.

Thirty-five per cent of residents over age 25 have a university certificate or degree. Seventy-seven per cent own their homes.

Health and social services, retail trade, manufacturing and construction are among the biggest employers. The 2006 census shows an average family income of $119,675 and an unemployment rate of four per cent.

This riding was created in the 2004 redistribution by combining more than 54,000 people formerly of Edmonton Southwest with about 20,000 from each of Wetaskiwin and Edmonton-Strathcona.

Political History

In the 2006 election, Conservative James Rajotte won with a margin of more than 22,000 votes over Liberal Jim Jacuta. Rajotte also held the seat in the two previous elections when he beat Liberal Bruce King in 2004 and won as an Alliance candidate in 2000.

For the two terms prior to that, the seat was held by Reformer Ian McClelland. Before McClelland's win, Tories Doug Roche (1979-84) and Jim Edwards (1984-93) represented the area.
