This inner-core riding is bounded by the North Saskatchewan River in the south, the CN Rail line running north to Manning Drive in the east, 167th Avenue in the north and 97th Street in the west. Edmonton City Airport is in the northeast corner.

Twenty-five per cent of residents are immigrants, representing a broad cultural mix. Ukrainians make up 15.5 per cent of the population, followed by Germans at 14 per cent. About nine per cent of the people are of Chinese origin, three per cent are Vietnamese and 2.6 per cent East Indians. Eight per cent of the population are aboriginals.

The major employers in Edmonton East include retail trade, construction, manufacturing and the service sector. The 2006 census shows an average family income of $72,471 and an unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent.

In the 1996 redistribution, this riding adopted about 16 per cent of the residents of Edmonton North. Then, in 2004, it lost about one-third of its former population, while gaining 43,742 people from Edmonton North.

Political History

Current incumbent Peter Goldring won with the Reform Party in 1997, upsetting then-incumbent Judy Bethel, a Liberal, by 3,470 votes. In 2000, under the Canadian Alliance banner, Goldring defeated Liberal Sue Olsen by 3,445 votes. As a Conservative, he defeated Liberal John Bethel in 2004. In the 2006 election, Goldring defeated Liberal Nicole Martel.

Over the past half-century, a wide range of parties has held the riding. In 1953 and 1957, the Social Credit Party took this seat, after which the Tories enjoyed a 30-year winning streak. Then, in 1988, incumbent PC Bill Lesick lost by 657 votes to the NDP's Ross Harvey. Harvey became the first New Democrat to win a federal seat in Alberta. Harvey, in turn, was replaced by the Liberal's Judy Bethel in 1993.

The riding was established as Edmonton East in 1914 and the name changed to Edmonton Centre-East in June 2000. The name was restored to Edmonton East in 2004.
