View these results in the interactive map »This southwestern Ontario riding takes in part of the city of Windsor along the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair.
It contains the Town of Tecumseh and the part of the City of Windsor lying east of Langlois Avenue, Tecumseh Road East and Pillette Road.
Manufacturing dominates the economy, with General Motors, Ford and Chrysler operating plants in the area.
The riding is heavily unionized. The 2006 census shows an average family income of $83,337 and an unemployment rate of 8.6 per cent.
Windsor-Walkerville was created in the 1966 redistribution from a major part of Essex East and part of Essex West. Windsor-Lake St. Clair was created in 1986 from Windsor-Walkerville and part of Essex-Windsor riding. The name was later changed to Windsor-St. Clair. Windsor-Tecumseh was created in 2004 from 100 per cent of Windsor-St.Clair and six per cent of Essex.
Population: 118,478 (2006 census; an increase of 1.7% since 2001)
Political History
NDP incumbent Joe Comartin maintained the New Democrats' hold on this riding when he beat Liberal Bruck Easton in the 2006 election by 9,233 votes. Comartin is serving his third term in office.
In 2004, Comartin defeated Liberal Rick Limoges by 3,818 votes. Comartin also defeated Limoges in 2000, by 401 votes. In a 1999 byelection, Limoges beat Comartin by 91 votes.
This riding was won by Liberal Shaughnessy Cohen in 1993 and 1997. Cohen collapsed at her desk in the House of Commons and died of a massive brain hemorrhage on Dec. 9, 1998.
Liberal Paul Martin Sr., father of Prime Minister Paul Martin, held Essex East from 1935 to 1968, when he resigned. He served as minister of national health and welfare from 1946 to 1957 and minister of external affairs from 1963 to 1968.
Liberal Mark MacGuigan was MP from 1968 to 1984 in Windsor-Walkerville. He was secretary of state for external affairs in 1980 and minister of justice in 1982.
Howard McCurdy won the riding for the NDP in 1984 and 1988.
