Career Background: In addition to political activities, has been an adviser to the federal government on matters related to the investigation of the 1985 Air India bombing, served as a mediator in an aboriginal fishing rights dispute in Burnt Church, N.B., chaired the Forum of Federations for seven years and reviewed strategies on higher education for the Ontario government.

Electoral History

Provincial: Elected in the riding of York South in a byelection in November 1982. Re-elected in the 1985 provincial election and again in 1987. Became premier of Ontario when the NDP won the 1990 election. Resigned from politics shortly after his party lost the 1995 election to the Liberals, though he had won his own riding. Moved to the private sector as a lawyer, and in the late 1990s resigned from the NDP when he was appointed to the federal Security Intelligence Review Committee. In 2006, joined the Liberal Party and ran unsuccessfully for the party leadership.

Federal: Elected as a New Democrat in the Toronto riding of Broadview in a 1978 byelection. Re-elected in the new riding of Broadview-Greenwood in the 1979 general election and again in 1980. Left federal politics to become leader of the Ontario NDP in 1982. Returned to federal politics as a Liberal in 2006, and was elected in this riding in the March 17, 2008, byelection.
