This Niagara area riding, on the south shore of Lake Ontario, contains part of the city of St. Catharines.

It runs from Lake Ontario in the north to St. Paul Street West, St. Paul Crescent, Twelve Mile Creek and Glendale Avenue in the south, between Fifteen Mile Creek in the west and the Welland Canal in the east.

Manufacturing is the major industry, most of which is in automotive and parts production. General Motors is a large employer. Retail trade and tourism are also significant. Average family income is $75,062 and unemployment is 6.5 per cent.

The riding was established in 1966. In 1996, part of the Welland-St. Catharines-Thorold riding was added. In 2004, part of the Niagara Centre riding was added in the south.

Population: 112,869 (2006 census; an increase of 1.3% since 2001)

Political History

In 2006, this riding sent a Conservative to Ottawa after a decade of Liberal voting. Tory Rick Dykstra won over Liberal incumbent Walt Lastewka by only 246 votes.

In 2004, Lastewka defeated Conservative Leo Bonomi to win a fourth term as MP.

PC Joe Reid won in 1979, 1980 and 1984 and PC Ken Atkinson took the seat in 1988.
