Party: Served as Conservative Ontario co-chair during 2004 election; was Ontario co-chair for Stephen Harper's leadership campaign. Served as co-chair of Jim Flaherty's Ontario PC leadership campaign. Youngest delegate to 1985 Provincial Leadership Convention. Founder of a special political recruitment program for students. 1988, president of PC Youth Wing. Served on provincial executive for two years.

Cabinet: Federal experience: Currently serves as minister of the Environment. Former president of the Treasury Board. Provincial experience: Former minister of Community and Social Services, 1999 to 2002, with responsibility for Francophone Affairs. Former minister responsible for children, 2001 to 2002. In April 2002, was associate minister of Francophone Affairs; chief government whip and deputy house leader. Was appointed Minister of Energy; minister responsible for Francophone Affairs; deputy house leader, in 2002.

Worked with the Nepean Chamber of Commerce to raise money for the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Involved with the Viewmount community garden and City of Ottawa greening program.

Career Background: Following his political career has served as a special adviser for the Canadian Red Cross. Was involved in humanitarian issues and in efforts to update the Red Cross’ legislative basis and to enhance its relations with governments at all levels.

Community Activities: Has served as parks and recreation coordinator and president, Crystal Beach Community Association, and helped lead the community effort against the closure of St. Thomas School. Was director of the West Nepean Seniors Home Support; volunteer with the West Nepean Ecumenical Residential Projects (seniors' housing); and director of the Raoul Wallenberg Foundation – a human rights organization. In the area of health and social services, has been director of Serenity House, a residential substance abuse treatment program unit, and director of the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre.

Municipal: Served three terms in municipal politics on the Nepean City and Ottawa-Carleton Regional Councils. Also served for five years on the board of directors of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
