This eastern Ontario riding contains part of the amalgamated city of Ottawa. The riding includes the former city of Nepean, the former Rideau township and the former Osgoode township.

It runs from Boundary Road in the east to Eagleson Road in the west, between Highway 417, the CN Rail line, Limebank Road, Leitrim Road and Hunt Club Road in the north and the Rideau River, Belmeade Road and Marionville Road in the south.

Major sources of employment include the federal government, the service sector and retail trade. The 2006 census shows an average family income of $110,275 and an unemployment rate of 4.5 per cent. More than six per cent of the population is francophone.

The riding of Nepean-Carleton was created in the 1976 redistribution from the former Grenville-Carleton riding. It was renamed Nepean in 1986. In 1996, it was combined with part of Carleton-Gloucester and Lanark-Carleton and became Nepean-Carleton again. In 2004, the riding lines were redrawn to take in part of eastern Ottawa, up to Highway 417.

Population: 133,245 (2006 census; an increase of 21.9% since 2001)

Political History

Conservative Pierre Poilievre is serving his second term in this riding after beating Liberal Michael Gaffney in 2006 by capturing more than 54 per cent of the vote.

In 2004, Poilievre defeated Liberal David Pratt, who had served two terms. Paul Martin named Pratt minister of defence in 2003.

Liberal Beryl Gaffney won in Nepean in 1988 and 1993.

The former Grenville-Carleton riding voted Tory from 1925 to 1965. Progressive Conservative Walter Baker was elected four times in Grenville-Carleton and Nepean-Carleton, serving from 1972 until his death in November 1983. He was appointed president of the Privy Council and minister of national revenue in 1979 under Joe Clark.

In 1984, PC Bill Clark defeated Liberal Gord Hunter in Nepean-Carleton.
