This riding is now New Democrat territory after candidate Chris Charlton received 3,266 more votes than Liberal Bill Kelly in the 2006 election.

In 2004, Liberal Beth Phinney defeated NDP candidate Charlton to win a fifth term in office.

This riding voted Conservative in 1972 and 1979 and New Democrat from 1980 to 1988. New Democrat Ian Deans held the riding in 1980 and 1984.

Marion Dewar, who was mayor of Ottawa from 1978 to 1985, won a 1987 byelection in Hamilton Mountain for the NDP, defeating Phinney by 1,668 votes. But Phinney beat Dewar by 73 votes in the 1988 general election and Phinney won the next five elections with strong margins.
