This highly affluent riding has the highest average income in Canada, as well as areas of much lower income. It includes the affluent neighbourhoods of the Bridle Path and Leaside as well as the densely populated, lower-income communities of Flemingdon and Thorncliffe Park.

The riding is bordered by Highway 401 to the north and Millwood Road and the Don River to the south. Yonge Street, Broadway Avenue, Eglinton Avenue, Bayview Avenue and Moore Avenue are on the western boundary, and Don Mills Road, the CN Rail line and the east branch of the Don River are on the east.

According to the 2006 census, the average family income in this riding is $183,605. More than 56 per cent of residents over age 25 have university certificates or degrees and about 45 per cent the workforce hold professional or managerial positions. There are many major business headquarters in the riding, as well as Glendon College (York University). Unemployment is 7.1 per cent.

The immigrant population is 46 per cent, and visible minorities make up about 43 per cent of the riding population.

The riding was created in 1976 as Don Valley and redrawn in 1996 to include part of Don Valley East and a small portion of Rosedale. In 2004, much of the riding remained unchanged.

Political History

Liberal John Godfrey has held the riding since 1993. In 2006, Godfrey earned more than 50 per cent of the vote and beat Conservative John Carmichael by a margin of 10,801.

In 2004, Godfrey defeated Conservative David Turnbull. Following the win, Paul Martin named Godfrey minister of state for infrastructure and communities.

PC John Bosley held the riding for four terms, beginning in 1979. Tory strategist Dalton Camp ran in this riding in 1968 and lost to Liberal Bob Kaplan.
