This riding in the Greater Toronto Area includes the southwest part of the City of Brampton.

It stretches from Highway 407, McLaughlin Road and Steeles Avenue in the south to Mayfield Road in the north, between Hurontario Street, Main Street North, Vodden Street East and Kennedy Road North in the east and Winston Churchill Boulevard in the west.

According to the 2006 census, about 46 per cent of the area's residents are immigrants and 44 per cent speak a first language other than English. Almost 22 per cent listed their ethnic origin as East Indian.

The strong manufacturing sector in Brampton includes automotive and aviation technology. Transportation, storage and business services are also important industries. Average family income is $85,352 and unemployment is 6.6 per cent.

This riding was created in 2004 out of 45 per cent of Brampton West-Mississauga and 23 per cent of Brampton Centre, its neighbour to the north. It was the second major redistribution in 10 years in this fast-growing region. In 1996, Brampton West-Mississauga was created from Brampton West-Mississauga and parts of Mississauga West and Mississauga East.

Political History

In 2006, Liberal Colleen Beaumier beat Conservative Bal Gosal by 7,643 votes to earn her fifth term as an MP. In the previous election, Beaumier took on Conservative Tom Clement and won the seat.

Previously, PC John McDermid, a former cabinet minister under Brian Mulroney, won four times in Brampton, later Brampton-Georgetown. He served as minister of state for international trade and housing, minister of state for privatization and regulatory affairs and minister of state for finance and privatization.
