Created in 2004, this riding is in a fast-growing part of Peel Region, west of Toronto, which contains part of the city of Brampton.

The riding stretches from Brampton city limits in the south to Mayfield Road in the north between Kennedy Road South, Vodden Street East, Main Street North and Hurontario Street in the west and Torbram Road, Bovaird Drive and Dixie Road in the east.

In the 2006 census the immigrant population totalled 47 per cent. The riding is home to significant Indian, Jamaican, German and Italian communities, and 45 per cent speak a language other than English.

Employment in Brampton is concentrated in manufacturing, including automotive and aviation technology and transportation, storage and business services. Average family income is $94,613 and unemployment is 6.7 per cent.

This riding was created in 2004 from 77 per cent of Brampton Centre and 17 per cent of Brampton-Gore-Malton-Springdale. The riding of Brampton-Georgetown was established in 1976 by merging parts of Peel-Dufferin-Simcoe, Halton and Mississauga.

Population: 131,797 (2006 census; an increase of 12.9% since 2001)

Political History

Liberal candidate Ruby Dhalla defeated Conservative Sam Hundal in the 2006 election by 7,802 votes. She also defeated Hundal in the 2004 election.

During Paul Martin's term as prime minister, Dhalla was one of Martin's so-called star candidates.

In Brampton Centre, Liberal MP Sarkis Assadourian defeated Reform's Don Crawford in 1997 and PC Beryl Ford in 2000. In that same election, Liberal Colleen Beaumier defeated Alliance candidate Hardial Sangha in what was then Brampton West-Mississauga.

PC John McDermid held the riding of Brampton-Georgetown for four terms beginning in 1979. He served in the Brian Mulroney cabinet as minister of state for international trade and housing, minister of state for privatization and regulatory affairs and minister of state for finance and privatization. In 1993 in Brampton-Georgetown, Liberal Beaumier defeated Reform's Ernie McDonald.
