In 2004, Patry defeated Bloc Québécois candidate Marie-Hélène Brunet by more than 22,000 votes to win a fourth term.
In the former riding of Dollard, Liberal Jean-Pierre Goyer was MP from 1965 to 1979. He was appointed solicitor general in 1970 and minister of supply and services in 1972. Liberal Louis Desmarais won in 1979 and 1980, but was defeated in 1984 by Progressive Conservative Gerry Weiner who became minister of state for immigration and multiculturalism.
