Federal: Elected in Laurier–Sainte-Marie as an Independent running on a sovereigntist platform in a byelection on Aug. 13, 1990. Became a member of the Bloc Québécois when it was formed a few months later. Became party leader in 1997. Re-elected as a BQ candidate in the general elections of 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2006.
