Political History

In 2006, Bloc Québécois incumbent Pierre Paquette defeated Conservative Sylvie Lavallee to win his third term. The Bloc's René Laurin was elected as MP in 1993 and 1997.

In the 2004 race, Paquette trounced Liberal Jean-François Coderre, winning 54 per cent of the vote. The BQ's René Laurin was elected as MP in 1993 and 1997.

This riding, called Joliette-L'Assomption-Montcalm, was Liberal from 1935 to 1957 inclusive, then voted Progressive Conservative in 1958, 1962 and 1963. Liberal Roland Comptois won in 1965, then ran in Terrebonne in 1968.

PC Roch Lasalle won here in 1968 by 172 votes. In 1972, Lasalle won again, this time as an Independent. Lasalle was re-elected as a PC in 1974, 1979 and 1980 and was appointed minister of supply and services in the 1979 Joe Clark government. In 1981, he resigned to lead the Union Nationale in the Quebec election and lost. Lasalle was re-elected in the 1981 byelection and in 1984. He was appointed minister of public works and minister of state in the Brian Mulroney government. He resigned in 1987 after reports of alleged influence peddling. He denied any wrongdoing, but was not a candidate in 1988. In 1988, PC Gaby Larrivée defeated Liberal Denis Coderre.
