Political History

Pablo Rodriguez and the Liberals continued to dominate the riding in 2006, winning a fourth straight election. In 2004, Rodriguez won his first term as an MP, running for the Liberals. Liberals also held the riding in the previous two elections.

In 2000, Liberal Yvon Charbonneau defeated Bloc Québécois candidate Jacques Dagenais to win a second term in Anjou-Rivières-des-Prairies.

In the former riding of St Léonard-Anjou, Liberal Monique Bégin, incumbent from St. Michel, won in 1979 and 1980. She was minister of national health and welfare from 1977 to 1984. In 1984, Liberal Alfonso Gagliano was elected here, but he was defeated by PC Jean Corbeil in 1988 in the newly created riding of Anjou-Rivières-des-Prairies. Corbeil was appointed minister of labour in 1989 and minister of transport from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, Roger Pomerleau of the BQ defeated Liberal Normand Biron by 532 votes, leaving Corbeil in third place.
