This southern Quebec riding has the Canada-U.S. border as its southern and eastern boundary. In the west, it forms the southern, eastern and western boundaries of the Sherbrooke riding. The riding contains part of the city of Sherbrooke, the regional county municipalities of Coaticook and Le Haut-St-François, and part of Memphrémagog. The city of Stanstead, the villages of Ayer's Cliff and North Hatley and the municipalities of Hatley, Ogden, Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley and Stoke fall in the riding, as well as Hatley and Stanstead townships.

Industries in the riding include manufacturing, retail trade and agriculture.

According to the 2006 census, 12 per cent of residents speak English as their mother tongue and 84 per cent are francophone. The average family income is $64,670 and unemployment is 5.8 per cent.

In 2004, seven per cent of Frontenac-Mégantic, three per cent of Richmond-Arthabaska and four per cent of Sherbrooke were added. The riding of Compton existed from 1867 to 1947 and 1966 to 1976. The riding of Mégantic-Compton-Stanstead was established in 1976. Compton-Stanstead was established in the 1996 redistribution from 68 per cent of Mégantic-Compton-Stanstead and 27 per cent of Richmond-Wolfe.

Population: 100,148 (2006 census; an increase of 6.4% since 2001)

Political History

The Bloc Québécois's France Bonsant was re-elected in 2006. She won her first term as an MP by defeating Liberal incumbent David Price in 2004. In 2000, Price had defeated the Bloc's Gaston Leroux. Price was elected as a Progressive Conservative in 1997 in the newly created riding, but left the PC caucus and joined the Liberals in 2000.

Compton and Compton-Frontenac riding was Liberal from 1935 to 1957 inclusive and PC in 1958. Voters sent Social Credit and Ralliement Créditiste MPs to Ottawa in the 1960s and the 1972 election. In 1974, Liberal Claude Tessier was elected. He won in Mégantic-Compton-Stanstead in 1979 and 1980, but was defeated in 1984. PC François Gérin was elected in 1984 and 1988. Gérin quit the PC Caucus and was a founding member of the BQ in 1990. In 1993, BQ Maurice Bernier defeated Liberal Eugene Naylor in this riding.
