This southern Quebec riding is bordered by the United States to the south and the St. Lawrence River along the west. It contains the regional county municipalities of Beauharnois-Salaberry, Les Jardins-de-Napierville and Le Haut-St-Laurent, including part of the Akwesasne Indian Reserve No. 15 in Quebec in the southwest corner of the riding.

The major population areas include Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Beauharnois, Huntingdon, Maple Grove and Napierville.

Manufacturing is the major industry, followed by retail trade and other services. The average family income is $62,936 and there is an unemployment rate of 6.5 per cent.

The riding is predominantly French-speaking, with 88 per cent of residents claiming French as their mother tongue in the 2006 census. Nine per cent of the population speak English as a first language. The total immigrant population is under three per cent. Seven per cent of the residents over age 25 have a university certificate or degree.

In 2004, a portion of Châteauguay riding has been added in the east. This riding existed as Beauharnois in the 1949 election and became Beauharnois-Salaberry in 1952. It was Beauharnois again in the 1968 election and was re-established as Beauharnois-Salaberry in 1972. In 1996, small parts of St-Jean and Châteauguay ridings were added.

Population: 106,856 (2006 census; an increase of 2.9% since 2001)

Political History

Incumbent Alain Boire of the Bloc Québécois was re-elected in 2006, handily defeating Conservative David Coutourier. Boire was first elected in 2004, when he beat out Liberal incumbent Serge Marcil by 8,482 votes.

Marcil had been elected in 2000, when he defeated BQ incumbent Daniel Turp by 2,896 votes. Turp was also a single-term MP.

Liberal Robert Cauchon won in 1953 and 1957, before being defeated by PC Gerard Bruchesi in 1958. Liberal Gerald Laniel won in Beauharnois-Salaberry in 1962 and served seven terms as MP. He was named deputy speaker in 1974. In 1984, the riding swung toward the Conservatives, electing PC Jean-Guy Hudon for two terms. Hudon didn't run in 1993. The BQ's Laurent Lavigne won that election, defeating Liberal Linda Julien.
