Alfred-Pellan

The Alfred-Pellan riding encompasses the eastern part of the city of Laval. It stretches north from Rivière-des-Prairies to Rivière-des-Milles Iles, east to the top of Ile Jésus and west to des Laurentides Boulevard and Rue Riopelle.

The workforce depends on manufacturing and the service industry. The average family income is $83,955 and the unemployment rate is a low five per cent.

According to the 2006 census, 72 per cent of residents cite French as their first language. Almost 10 per cent list Italian as their mother tongue, twice as many as those who list English. The total immigrant population is more than 16 per cent. Eighteen per cent of residents over age 25 have a university certificate or degree.

In 2004, the riding's name was changed from Laval East to Alfred-Pellan. The previous western boundary was the CP Rail line and Boulevard des Laurentides. The riding was established in 1966 as Duvernay. The name was changed from Duvernay to Laval East in 1990. There was no change in the 1996 redistribution.

Political History

The Bloc Québécois held on to the riding in 2006, although it won a smaller percentage of the vote than when in took the riding from the Liberals in 2004. Carrier ousted incumbent Liberal Carole-Marie Allard, who served one term.

In 1968 in Duvernay, Liberal Eric Kierans won by 2,476 votes. He was appointed minister of revenue and minister of health in 1966, postmaster general in 1968 and minister of communications in 1969. He resigned from cabinet in 1971 and did not run in 1972.

Liberal Yves Demers won four terms from 1972 to 1980, but was defeated in 1984. PC Vincent Della Noce won in 1984 and 1988. But Della Noce came third in 1993, when the BQ's Maud Debien won decisively, 15,221 votes ahead of Liberal Raymonde Folco. Debien won a second term in 1997, defeating Liberal Nathalie Paradis.
