Federal: First elected in King-Hants as a Progressive Conservative in 1997 and re-elected in 2000. Ran unsuccessfully for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative party in May 2003. Joined the Liberal party the same year and was elected in 2004 and 2006. Ran for leadership of the Liberal party in 2006.

Cabinet: Served as minister of public works and government services, and receiver general of Canada, from 2004 to 2006.
