Career Background: Since 1970, he was a dairy, beef and grain producer at Easterhaven Farms. In 1972, he was the youth president of the National Farmers' Union before being its CEO for 11 years. He was an adviser to former prime minister Pierre Trudeau's government for the Conagrex federal export agency in 1983, an adviser for the Tri-National Exchange on Agriculture, the environment and Free Trade Agreements with Canada, the United States and Mexico. In 1991, he was an adviser and delegate to GATT discussions in Geneva and Brussels and served as a panelist to a congressional briefing on NAFTA in Washington in March 1993.
