Became leader of the provincial New Democrats in 1992 and was re-elected in 1993, 1996, 1999 and 2003. Resigned from his post as provincial party leader in 2006 to resume his law career full time.
Federal: First elected as a member of Parliament for St. John's East in a 1987 by-election. Defeated in the 1988 federal election and entered provincial politics.
