A former editor of several mining and oil industry magazines at Transcontinental Media Company who has written for the Northern Miner, the Canadian Press, Atlantic Business and the St. John's Telegram. He is also a commentator on CBC Radio. In 2006, he founded the Business Post, a Newfoundland business newspaper.

Community Activities: Established and ran a group home for foster children in B.C. between 1991 and 1995. Past director of the Society of Organized Services, an organization dedicated to charity and community empowerment , in Parksville, B.C. Helped build and sponsor an orphanage for street children in Katmandu, Nepal, now run by Buddhist monks

Career Background: After graduating from Memorial University, he worked briefly as a journalist for CBC television and radio before pursuing a career in law. For 16 years, he was a partner at the law firm Williams, Harris, Roebothan and McKay, where he was partnered with Newfoundland Conservative Leader Danny Williams. In 1997, he opened his own law practice.

Electoral History

Municipal: Ran unsuccessfully for mayor of St. John's in the 1997 municipal election.

Provincial: Elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in a 1990 byelection for St. John's East. Became leader of the provincial New Democrats in 1992 and was re-elected in 1993, 1996, 1999 and 2003. Resigned from his post as provincial party leader in 2006 to resume his law career full time.

Federal: First elected as a member of Parliament for St. John's East in a 1987 by-election. Defeated in the 1988 federal election and entered provincial politics.
