SOCIAL ISSUESFamilies
At some point in our lives, just about everyone is a member of a family. The image of the middle-class family is one often evoked on the campaign trail. The policies included here cover some of the issues families deal with every day: buying a home, parental leave, tuition, senior care and child care.
ConservativesLeader Stephen Harper says his party would extend parental leave to the self-employed. Harper also announced that his party would reduce seniors' taxable income by raising the amount of net income that qualifies by $1,000. more
LiberalsThe party plans to provide a refundable child tax credit that would eventually be worth $350 per child. The Liberals would also introduce a new guaranteed family supplement that would provide $1,225 to low-income families with children under 18. more
BlocThe party would support increasing monthly benefits for some seniors by $110 a month. The Bloc supports a 10-year, interest-free loan program for first-time homebuyers.
NDPThe NDP have pushed for a national child-care program that would create child-care spaces regardless of income. Leader Jack Layton estimates the cost at $1.45 billion for the first year. more
GreenThe Green party would forgive half of a student's loans for those who earn a post-secondary degree or certificate. The party would restore and expand the federal government's summer jobs program. more
