Darrell Pasloski may be a relative newcomer in Yukon politics, having gone from two Whitehorse drugstores to the premier’s office in the span of three years. Now, his Yukon Party is counting on him to guide it toward an unprecedented third term in government.
Of course, Pasloski also needs to win a seat in the Yukon legislature during this fall's election. Pasloski, 50, was the pharmacist and owner of two Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Whitehorse when he made his political debut as a Conservative candidate in Yukon during the October 2008 federal election.
He came in second place to then-incumbent MP Larry Bagnell, a Liberal, who secured 45 per cent of the vote over Pasloski’s 33 per cent.
Fast forward to the spring of 2011, when longtime Yukon premier Dennis Fentie announced that he would step down as Yukon Party leader.
That was when Pasloski entered a three-man race to succeed Fentie as Yukon Party leader.
After party members voted on May 28, Pasloski secured 767 votes, while his closest opponent, tourism operator Rod Taylor, had 436 votes. Jim Kenyon, a former economic development minister, took just 48 votes.
"I'm very excited. I've had a day now to let it sink in and now we're ready to get down to work," Pasloski told CBC News a couple of days after he had won the party leadership.
Pasloski was sworn in as premier on June 11. With the legislature not in session during the summer, the new premier met with various groups, met with other western premiers in Yellowknife, and embarked on a tour of communities across the territory.
