District Profile:
The Whitehorse riding of Porter Creek Centre was created in 2002 when Porter Creek North was divided. It is bordered by the Yukon River to the north and east and the Alaska Highway to the west. The northern boundary runs along Wann Road to Sycamore Street, then along Oak Street to the Yukon River. Developing new residential lots on existing green space is a big issue for all residents of Porter Creek.
Political History:
The Yukon Party's Archie Lang was re-elected in 2006 with 47 per cent of the vote. He won this riding in 2002, defeating Liberal cabinet minister Scott Kent and the NDP's Judi Johnny. Lang is the minister of energy, mines and resources. His brother, former Yukon politician and current Yukon federal senator Dan Lang, was the MLA for Porter Creek East from 1978 to 1992. Kent was the MLA for the riding of Riverside from 2000 to 2002, when the riding was eliminated after a boundary review.
Archie Lang is not running for re-election.
