The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and 6,400 band students got together at B.C. Place on Monday to play nearly 10 minutes of Beethoven. That performance is going to put the VSO in the Guinness World Records book.

Students came from 160 schools around the province to help the symphony set the record.

For some students it meant spending as many as 20 hours on buses getting to Vancouver.

However, they all made it to the stadium where VSO music director Bramwell Tovey got them in tune before launching them into an arrangement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

After nine minutes and 44 seconds, Tovey announced the musicians had eclipsed the previous mark set two years in Birmingham, England when 3,500 musicians got together to play for seven minutes and 42 seconds.
