Windsor police honour guard to attend Moncton RCMP funeral
Windsor police will be in Moncton to pay tribute to the three fallen RCMP officers today.
A regimental funeral is planned for Constables Douglas Larche, Dave Ross and Fabrice Gevaudan.
Police spokesperson Sgt. Matthew D'Asti says two members of the Windsor Police Service's honour guard will attend in full dress uniform.
Governor General David Johnston and Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be in attendance.
"It reminds us as well of what happened to us here in Windsor, with the murder of John Atkinson," D'Asti said. "Definitely, there was tremendous support from our policing partners, from across the country, as well as the United States. We had a huge funeral here for John, and we know it's important. It's part of the healing process."
Atkinson was shot and killed eight years ago.
As many as 7,000 police officers will attend today's service at the Moncton Coliseum.
Justin Bourque is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in last week's shooting.
