Windsor city council has approved giving the Detroit Parade Company $10,000. It's the cost of being a sponsor for next week's fireworks on the Detroit River.

Mayor Eddie Francis says Windsor benefits from the annual display.

"The Detroit Parade Company does a phenomenal job. They've got a wonderful job planned for this year," Francis said. "They've got sponsors lined up and they always do a wonderful job. So everything else is just typical rumour innuendo speculation that is counter-productive."

The rumour is that this could be the last year for the fireworks because Detroit Mayor Dave Bing has said his city cannot afford to pay the policing costs.

The fireworks are scheduled for June 25.
